Klobuchar Disappoints in critical FISA vote

UPDATE: Klobuchar issues a statement on her FISA vote and my predictable response.

The (now) Democratic led Senate approved an appalling piece of legislation, drafted by the White House, that damages our system of government and shows a tremendous lack of political will to fix evident problems. Astonishingly, S. Klobuchar (D-MN; whom I've watched approvingly thus far) was one of the Democratic Senators that voted
with the Republicans in support of this Bill.

I'm so pissed and exasperated, I actually wrote to S. Klobuchar for an explanation. I don't know what good it'll do, but here's what I wrote (I'll follow with any response I receive):

Senator Klobuchar,

As a Minnesotan and US citizen, I am APPALLED at your yea vote on a FISA bill drafted by the White House (S.1927).

The FISA provisions, as conceived by its original drafters, explicitly anticipated the sort of abuse of Executive power we've seen under this Administration (including abuses during wartime). Your vote damages our government's delicate balance of powers by removing meaningful judicial oversight of domestic surveillance by the Executive AND effectively endorses the illegal domestic surveillance program initiated by the Executive branch. Senators Rockefeller (Chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence) and Feingold have clearly set out why supporting this Bill was a mistake; yet you've supported it.

When I voted in 2006, I expected a Democratic led legislature to vigorously defend the Senate's role in government and work to overcome its weakened state under years of Republican leadership. Votes like this clearly indicate your lack of political will to fix serious deficiencies in our system of government.

As a constituent, I'd like from you a clear and compelling reason why you voted to remove judicial oversight of some of the worst (and illegal) excesses of this Administration.

Sincerely,

Mischa Beitz

I was shocked and appalled

I was shocked and appalled as well by this vote. Heck, I worked on her campaign. I wrote to Klobuchar myself and would be interested to hear if she gets back to you. I've heard nothing. Very disappointing.
